You need to "hide" the XCode 4 application package or at least move it out of the applications folder.

Here is what I did:

rename XCode.app to XCode4.app.
Zip XCode 4.app
Remove XCode4.app
Empty the Trash
Download and install XCode 5.
Expand the XCode4.app.zip file

Now you have two version of XCode in your Apps Folder.
