David,

	I'm not aware of any way to show line #s (and would be interested if anyone else has figured out how to do this), but you can copy, cut, or paste to your heart's content.  The left and right comparison panes are immutable, but the merge pane on the bottom (which you may have to reveal by dragging up on the handle) is fully editable.  I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are asking, but hopefully this helps.
