Jens, maybe I am misunderstanding, but I have been using FileMerge to compare arbitrary files, copies of files from two projects, even storyboards and xibs. It just lacks a couple of things that annoyed me..

However, I agree, $50 > is a lot.

FileMerge is, ummm, lacking in many things.  If you diff files often, you really should consider one of the many alternatives.  These days I use Araxis Merge, which I find quite nice.

It does look nice, but $129 just to get some fancier diff/merge features seems pretty steep. The other commercial diff apps I’ve seen are also $50 and up. The developers must be assuming that most people in their target market are going to ignore the price and just file an expense report ;-)

It’s a shame the nice file-compare UI in Xcode 4+ can’t be used to compare arbitrary files, instead of just SCM revisions of one file. It already takes care of 99% of my file comparing needs, and the other 1% of cases aren’t common enough to justify dropping half a Benjamin or more.
