Yes, I was thinking about the price thing too, but didn’t comment before because I thought it might be a bit OT…
The pricing needs to reflect the cost to produce and maintain it divided by the number of units you expect to sell, then add the per unit support costs, and factor in your profit and overheads.
With a programming tool, you are already down to a relatively small potential market, and when there are other tools out there which are free and “good enough” for many peoples’ needs, you have an even smaller market. I imagine a customer base of developers would be one of the more demanding types of customer bases to have (at least they are not ignorant, but they will poke and prod and ask hard questions and demand improvements etc).
So, small market, significant competition, and high support costs means that the price needs to be correspondingly higher to make a profit. And people either need it or don’t need it, so you can’t do as some people can with games and make the price really low so people will just buy it for a few minutes of entertainment. You either need a diff tool or you don’t.
I’m not surprised at the prices of the products, given these conditions.
The purchasing decision needs to come down to the value to you. What is the value of your time, and how much time will this tool save you, or how much of a better product will you produce etc.
Regards
Gideon
