Xcode creates silly Bundle identifier

My Info.plist contains:
Bundle identifier (aka. CFBundleIdentifier) = de.mdenkmann.${PRODUCT_NAME:rfc1034identifier}
But the resulting Info.plist contains:
Bundle identifier = de.mdenkmann.--------
rfc1034 seems to mean: "convert everything which an Englishman might not understand into a dash-hyphen".
Which is a curiously insular notion of language.
But the real question is: can I set my own Bundle identifier, or would that confuse Xcode?
Is this Bundle identifier used in other places than ~/Library/Preferences ?
Gerriet.
