At the top of the assistant pane is a bar containing a bunch of widgets. There is a thing that looks like eight little rectangles in two rows. Then there is a left triangle and a right triangle. The next thing in the row (the first item in the Jump Bar) is the Tracking menu; it tells the assistant pane what kind of automatic tracking to do on the main pane. Alternatively, while in the assistant pane, press Control-4 to summon the menu.

If you have the current edition of my books, see Figure 6-6 in the Fundamentals book, and the Views chapter (the first chapter) in the Programming book, immediately under Layout (p. 22 in the printed/PDF version), to see where I discuss using this to summon the nib preview. m.
