Found it: My entire system went crazy, menus wouldn't work, needing extra clicks
to reveal sub-menus. I had a hunch that it has to do with the mouse driver (I
use a Cyborg RAT7). Turns out that was it.
I have no idea how the mouse driver manages to influence that kind of stuff but
apparently it does.
Works fine now. Sorry for the noise.
