Xcode fails to symbolicate

  • Subject: Xcode fails to symbolicate

Once again, I found myself manually symbolicating iOS crash logs (thank goodness for http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13970959/how-to-manually-symbolicate-a-crash-log-with-atos which has the steps that do the job).

Yes, I have the .dSYM and the .app (extracted from the .ipa). (We build on a separate Jenkins machine, but I copy them over to mine, partly on the theory that this makes Spotlight index them so Xcode can find them).

I'm getting the new-fangled .ips files, but I just rename those to .crash and Xcode will at least open them and symbolicate system calls. But it almost never symbolicates my app's methods. And atos seems to always work (although it takes all the manual steps to get the right address to pass it.)

Are there any tricks to getting Xcode to actually find symbols? Any good way to report a bug with a 755 MB .app?
