ARM simulator for OS X?

There are some Open Source ARM simulators for Mac OS X. Whenever I
read their instructions my head spins.
What I'd like is not to install a whole OS, but to run one single
subroutine - and sub-subroutines - then get a count of the cycles
required to execute it. I used to do that with the ARM Holdings tools
when I was working on an embedded gadget.
Now I could profile my code on my iDevice if I can't use a simulator.
It's just that I was hoping for something that would be easier for
tuning up my code.
Also I want to brush up on my ARM assembly, it is quite rusty.
Is there an ARM simulator that works out-of-the-box?
(The iOS Simulator actually uses i386 code.)
Thanks,
Mike
