AFAICT, the bug is that when you change the storyboard identifier, Xcode doesn’t actually save the identifier to the storyboard file until you switch away to a different file. So, although you *thought* you set the identifier to “initial”, you didn’t really.
It may be a bit more complicated than that, but this much I could see looking at the storyboard file in TextEdit.
This also doesn’t explain why ‘instantiateInitialController’ returned nil.
