oops that was wrong - I remembered it incorrectly - the local files are .git/config not .gitconfig, so that’s what you want to look for. I also, re-reading the docs, found there may be an /etc/gitconfig file which contains system-wide defaults. I don’t have one, but it’s another place to check (although —global should have overridden it).
So it’s
<project>/.git/config
~/.gitconfig
/etc/gitconfig
one broken with a ‘/‘, one with a ‘.’ and the other without. There will be a quiz later.
