Thanks guys. So a window at, say, 400x400 would be large on an 11-inch screen, but wouldn't look comically tiny on a 27-inch display? I guess I always assumed it would, but maybe OS X scales everything up somewhat? Having no idea how this stuff looks visually makes thinking about it quite interesting. :) For now I'll stick to the default/minimum sizes, that should work well.

…and the app should remember what size & position the user adjusts the window to, and reopen it that way the next time. (NSWindow does have API to help with that.)
