This happened to us recently when we bought a 10-pack of el-cheapo knock-off Thunderbolt cables from eBay. They're visually identical to the OEM cables, but somehow they're not made right. Most worked properly at the beginning of their use, but now some won't charge, some won't connect, some even broke apart when unplugging them!
FWIW, we never experienced any issues using OEM Thunderbolt Apple cables, but I would expect that even those can become too worn to be reliable.
Occam's Razor says try the simplest fix first: swap out the cable for a new one and see if the behavior persists.
