You reminded me of one thing I forgot to say earlier. After the store-based 7.0.1 update completed, my next launch of Xcode was instant, and didn’t have to wait for a Gatekeeper check or a .dmg-to-Applications copy. That eliminated about 20 minutes of waiting around, after the download was done.

So there is *some* benefit to using the store mechanism.
