Printed output doesn’t go to the assistant editor, it goes to the debug area at the bottom. There’s a menu item “Show Debug Area” (Command-Shift-Y), though I assume you can get there via VoiceOver, too. It has a toolbar at the top of the panel, and the first button in the toolbar is a hide/show toggle for the body of the pane.
