A little bit of voodoo might be unavoidable. I take it as a given then newer versions of Xcode do some kind of fixup on older sets of project settings, but that you can’t necessarily rely on this producing the same result as starting over with new settings and targets, especially if the old project was never entirely correct.

It's essentially (b).

That’s good, because it’s the easy case, in that recent Xcode versions have the ability to embed the framework for you (via the General tab). Plus, you can create a new app project with an embedded framework target, and compare the settings with your actual project.

For a plugin bundle, it’s a bit more obscure because I don’t know that there’s any canonical reference.
