I’m pretty sure it did what it now does, all the way back to Xcode 4. I'd be curious to know if there's a sensible way that works.
I was able to do it with this sequence:
Command-1 Option-Up Arrow Option-Command-Comma (open in primary editor) Command-Return (close assistant editor)
which might be acceptable if macro-ized.
