I'm currently using Xcode 3.2.6 on MacOS 10.9.5 on an Early 2008 MacPro. This has been an excellent development platform for my needs (console programming), but my big-iron MacPro is getting a bit old and I'll be thinking about an upgrade in a few months (most likely NOT to the latest pineapple MacPro, but we'll see...)
Way back when, the traffic on this list suggested that Apple made some rather poor Xcode user interface design decisions when transitioning from Xcode 3.2.6 to Xcode 4.0, so I resisted doing any upgrades. However, I'll be pretty much forced to upgrade to the latest Xcode if I buy a new Mac for software development (unless I try to use VMware and run MacOS 10.9.5 in a virtual machine, etc., which doesn't seem very attractive).
I am wondering what, if any, capabilities I might lose when I upgrade to the latest Xcode. I've listed some of the capabilities I often use below. Can anyone shed any light on this question?
== CAPABILITIES I USE ==
User Interface:
+ scatter source code editor windows across multiple monitors
+ open a single source code file in multiple independent editor windows
+ split a single source code editor window into any number of independently scrollable sub-panes
+ source code syntax coloring
+ search within a project and within a file
+ compile source code in a particular file ONLY when I request it with <cmd>-K
+ have a separate console window which can be independently positioned like any other window; can copy or clear the console window contents whenever desired
Back-End:
+ all of the usual: dependency tracking, selective recompilation, linking, executing with user I/O via the console window, etc.
== CAPABILITIES I DON'T USE ==
+ debugger
+ class browser (I'm using plain old C)
+ SCM
