Unassigned images in launch image set

Xcode 8.2.1

I'm trying to set the iOS app launch image, but Xcode complains:

The launch image set "LaunchImage" has 2 unassigned children.

The image wells are filled, so how do I "assign" them? The app launches with a white screen. I tried creating an additional xcassets entry, but the pulldown never includes it so I can't select it to be the launch image.
