Pasting text into an AppleWorks/Nisus Writer/Word (etc) document requires
the assistance of the application, I believe.
And yes, that was the point of this discussion - which is why I was startled
to discover that an application 'tell' block nested inside a Finder 'tell'
block seemed to run more quickly than a non-nested application 'tell' block,
at least with some apps. I had previously striven to keep tell blocks
directed at the Finder and other apps separate wherever possible, believing
that this would lead to faster, more efficient scripts.

For clarification, my test script asked each word processor/text editor to
activate at the start of its tell block(s), and the testing was done on a G4
867 running OS 9.2.2 and AS 1.8.2b. Apologies for omitting this in my
original post.
The paste command was chosen because it is deployed in exactly the same way
in all the apps tested.
