Mea culpa...I seem to have misread your earlier posting.
You seem to have run the tests in the order bare application; nested
application in each case. It's possible that you're seeing working set
issues with the paging of application code (assuming you have virtual
memory turned on) and with the memory caching of disk contents.
How about running (for one of the apps) bare, nested, bare, nested. Any
obvious difference between the first and second bare timings?
Same for bare, bare, nested, nested.
