assigning unicode string

Q1.
Is there a way to call unix command within the script?

Q2.
I need to do some batch processing of mp3
using iTunes. I have to set a unicode string
to the artist field of the track. The unicode string
is coming from the unix command (see Q1 above).
However how would I assign a unicode string to the
variable? I've tried using <<data utxt00650066>>, but it
does not work. I guess you cannot assign <<>>
to a variable directly. Using escape sequence '\x'
doesn't work neither.

Thanks.

-Sam
