Although that is not "as unique" an identifier as the file system ID. The
inode number is good for the life of the file; the file system file ID is
good for the life of the volume. The file system file ID will never match
a file--on that volume--once the file which had it is gone; sooner or later
the inode number will.
I suspect that's why it wasn't done. But again, I'm guessing...I wasn't there.
I put "as unique" in quotes because something is either unique or it
isn't...there are no qualifiers possible.
