Thanks for the clear explanation. I had thought that we were discussing a new (since 10.2.x) bug in Finder, but I guess it had not yet sunk in that in 10.3.x Apple has more completely adopted the unix philosophy of hiding from view things we are not ordinarily supposed to change.

Very well. If they don't want me to look, I won't. Seems silly, though. We never needed such protection from ourselves before X. I feel like a heathen being asked to wear clothes.
