I think that script applications compiled under AS versions earlier than 1.6
should continue to work, so long as they are not recompiled under AS 1.6,
since the applet resources would have been assembled under the earlier AS
version.

That would be handy, but unfortunately it's not the case. The applet shell is part of the AppleScript extension, not the applet itself, so what version it was compiled with is irrelevant as far as this bug is concerned -- what matters is what you're running with.
