I'd like to write a replacement to the built-in desktop picture engine, one
that wouldn't rely on Quartz Extreme to fade in and out pictures as they are
replaced on the desktop.

Any suggestion as to where to start?

1) It's not Quartz Extreme which is used AFAIK, but OpenGL.

2) If you don't rely on OpenGL, it's just going to be way slower.
