By icon, I didn't mean actual application/document icons, rather small images I could use in my app. For instance, I could definitely use a small graphic to go in a tableview cell next to the text (similar to the iTunes souce tableview) and a few buttons could definitely be spruced up with a nice image.

Ximian produced some icons for Gnome that you can use, if the license is compatible with your application. They're already in PNG format:
