Line numbers in IDE

Hi -

I'm currently in the process of writing a programmer's editor/IDE type
application and I want to display line numbers down the left side of my
text area, like XCode or BBEdit does. I've tried a number of different
ways to figure out how to do this, but they've all failed. Can anyone
give me a few pointers? Thanks!
