Yeah this last time I use the Finder to pull down the disk images for
Xcode tools and it worked just fine (drag them all over in one
drag/drop operation). No beach ball in the finder that I noticed
(10.3.4). I had issues before that which made me use curl or a
graphical FTP client/helper application. I imagine that if the FTP
server is slow then folks are getting issues with it taking to long to
keep the FTP login valid but this last try (a few days ago) it just
sailed through the whole set files without issues.
Once downloaded I simply double clicked on the first disk image part in
the sequence, stuffit unbinned it, and the disk image got verified and
mounted.
In fact you don't even need stuffit, etc. Simply strip the ".bin" off
of the end of the first disk image and double click it, at least that
has also worked in my testing (they are disk images after all, no
resource fork to maintain).
