Asking how to do something even if it might in some way contravene UI guidelines is on-topic provided that it's relevant to Cocoa.


It is reasonable for list-members to point out the contravention in a brief, civilised, sentence, for example:
"This goes against the UI guidelines [described here <link>]."
however this should typically be done in the context of a follow-up that does actually address the issue (using Cocoa if a Cocoa solution is available, otherwise pointing to other API, or stating that it's not possible).


It is *not* reasonable for list-members to post paragraphs of text berating the original poster(*). If you want to make non-technical suggestions, then do so -- politely and constructively -- off-list.

(*) I'm not suggesting that the other respondents on this occasion did berate the original poster, but it has certainly happened in the past.
