Have an object connected to an IBOutlet in your controller. Then you can do something like:

- (void) showPreferences
{
    if (!IBEmailTextField_)
    {
        if (![NSBundle loadNibNamed:@"Preferences" owner:self])
        {
            NSLog(@"Failed to load NIB file");
            return;
        }
    }
    [[IBEmailTextField_ window] makeKeyAndOrderFront:self];
}

IBEmailTextField_ being my IBOutlet here.
