I think a lot of the direct performance problems others have addressed, but you might look into using regular expressions. I've been using AGRegex framework (http://sourceforge.net/projects/agkit) but there's also ogrekit (http://www-gauge.scphys.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~sonobe/OgreKit/index_en.html). I've found scanner WAY to cumbersome for a lot of tasks, i havn't performed any scientific bench-marking but I think that either one of these framework will do you better in terms of power, ease and speed.
