Thanks to all of you who responded. Even though I've been at Cocoa for
a couple of years now, I still feel like a novice sometimes.
I think I can take a few lessons away from this:
1. NSScanner is a memory hog and shouldn't be invoked more than
necessary (thanks Joar). I invoke it much, much more than is necessary.
2. With careful re-writing of my loops I can probably accomplish what I
need with one NSScanner, by making use of some of the methods that I
had overlooked (thanks Guy and Jonathan). I have more stuff than I had
shown in the original mail as I had pared it down to the bare minimum
for clarity, but it's just a case of taking time to think it through.
3. With Cocoa, it's often a matter of getting into the right mindset
rather than just diving in. I spend most days working with MATLAB ('cos
I'm lazy), FORTRAN ('cos it seemed like a good idea to someone in 1989)
and ADA (don't ask), so I'm often not in the right mindset in the
evenings. A bottle of wine usually sorts things out.
Thanks again
Matt
