Why would it not be?

There is a documented limitation of ObjC constant strings that they only accept 7-bit ASCII. I'm not sure if this is also a functional limitation, but it's probably safest to stick with that as long as Apple doesn't update the docs.

That said, there is no reason why you should have to use ObjC static strings just because you're an ObjC Cocoa developer. This is also why I pointed to the list archives - as this has been discussed over and over and over again...
