Actually, this is how Apple does things for Address Book and iCal.
I still have to come up with a solution for out of sync meta data.

I guess this is not a good idea: this way, the files and metadata
can get out of sync, causing any sort of havoc.
I am also *pretty* sure Apple documentation very explicitly
discourages this, although at the moment I am not sure in which
document.
