Actually, this is how Apple does things for Address Book and iCal.
Not quite. They *cache* metadata in separate files, just since
Spotlight cannot index "a part of a document". It's a tech trick
invented just for this very reason.
Them files -- far as I know, of course -- *do not contain any
metadata at all*. All the data and metadata are still in the AB or
iCal database, and the only thing those cache files do is
representing separate records.
