You are skirting the issue. The issue isn't whether a good camera profile
saves time, makes clients happy or produces good results. The issue here are
the cases where a camera profile produces absolute junk that would be
impossible to "fix". Perhaps I'm the only one here that has had experiences
where a custom camera profile produced results after tagging that would hose
the file if one converted to a Working Space. You simply can't fix sever
posterization. The profile clearly wasn't any good. The issue is WHY does
this happen? Why can you take the IDENTICAL file of the Macbeth, run it
through a different package and get good results only to find the exact
opposite effect on a different camera? Is it the assumptions made by the
software?
Why is it you can make a profile that works beautifully with a camera only
to find it stinks in a completely different shooting situation? Yes, I've
built profiles for *some* digital camera where the profile worked inside and
out and in every conceivable situation. I've also seen situations where the
profile worked wonderfully in one situation and failed elsewhere.
If you can build a single profile for one camera and use it everywhere
that's wonderful and a goal we all want. What cameras, software, targets and
host processing applications (you have several options for Kodak cameras for
example) did you use to produce this profile? If you've only profiled a few
camera systems, you might be in for a shock next time you attempt to do this
on a system you never profiled. Some camera systems respond better to
profiling than others. I'm not convinced (is anyone but Jack) that there is
a one size fits all solution for all camera systems? If so, I want it.
