Fair enough. Note that I said rendering resolution, not print
resolution. An IJ printer (rip) advertising 720x2880 dpi print
resolution will typically render at 720x720 ppi (!) since very few rips
(or drivers) can handle asymetric rendering resolutions. That means that
sending data down at anything more than 720x720 ppi is just a waste of
bandwith and time, and it might actually result in artifacts depending
on how the rip handles downsampling. The rendering resolution is the
maximum image resolution one should ever use, because anything above
that will definitely be thrown away (downsampled). But typically you
will stop seeing benefits of increasing image resolution well below the
rendering resolution (assuming you can actually scan/generate/capture at
sufficient resolution). Another rule of thumb: never do upsampling
(making the image bigger than it was originally) in PhotoShop or the
like before sending it to a rip: again just a waste of time and
bandwith. Any PS rip can do that job just as well, and much faster
typically.
But of course I agree with your bottom line: experiment, and use what
works for you.
I agree wholeheartedly with the 720x720 ppi rule of thumb, but I've
found PShop does a better job resolving 'ridiculous' upsampling (in
excess of 60 percent) than the RIPs we have used and does it faster.
Funnier still, printing a low resolution (96ppi) file from Photoshop
to full upsized postscript, distilling to PDF (1.4), drag and drop
into RIP and then letting the RIP take it from there has rendered
some rather interesting results neither PS nor RIP (Onxy,
Scanvec-Amiable, Fiery) can rival. Even when we upsize again at the
RIP (using the PDF). Something interesting there...
However, like you say: whatever works for you. In the large format
world, waiting to see what your RIP will do costs time and money.
Postscript distilled to PDF only wastes time.
