The built-in profiles certainly give you consistant color...it just isn't
very good. The images are certainly servicable, but if there is something I
can do to make them uniformly better, I'd like to "make it so". That's my
job! And I certainly don't expect to get a perfect ICC profile of our
digital cameras...likewise I don't expect ICC profiles to be the silver
bullets in our pre-press workflow. Even though color management bills
itself as a push-button kind of solution, I learned very quickly when I got
into this that this isn't the case. A CMS makes for very repeatable (and
predictable) color, but not perfect color. If the "standard starting
point" sucks, then I'd rather start someplace else! It seems easier to me
to just shut the color management off on the front end (capture) and just
assign a good RGB working space in Photoshop. I'm sure many people will
disagree with me on this, and I will continue to experiment with DCam
profiling as time allows. Thanks to everyone for all of the good
information and opinions.
