I've asked the printer guys about this in the past (last WWDC) and was

there was
no easy way to print a raw test target for profiling.
So, when I print to the freebie Lexmark printer[1] that came with my
Mac, the printer driver dialog has a "Color" panel where I can select
"Colorsync" or "Built-in" color matching. So if colorsync is always
involved, how exactly do the two processes differ?
I'm relatively new (last year or so) to the "digital darkroom" (and the
mac) and I've found colorsync pretty simple in basic principle but when
it comes to printing, in OS9 I've found printing to be terribly
confusing and in OSX things are quite different but more or less just as
confusing. I've wasted a lot of paper trying to figure out what
actually happens and I'm still not sure I know.
Why does it have to be so confusing? It seems that you just need two
standard print panel options: send the data straight through (in other
words, the application is responsible for any color management) or
convert to a particular output profile (default or user selected) and
then send it through.
I'll double check this Monday and see if this changed in a later OS
version,
and nobody noticed...
...www.macosrumors.com notes potential of a substantially re-worked
printing system in 10.2, though no mention of color management as a
dimension of the re-working...

[1] I'm pondering the merits of purchasing a real printer versus hauling
CDROMs down to the local photo lab...
