OK. I see I got myself into trouble with this "gray balancing" idea and
linearization. When I wrote "Gray balance is the holy grail of color
management" I didn't mean that, as far as ink limiting and linearization is
concerned, that it's a sine qua none condition to superlative profiling, or
that I think that it warrants better profiles. I personnally tend to
believe, yes, that it can only help profiling efforts. But the gist of me
opening my loud mouth on this thread was mostly to comment that, gray
balance, as a topic in color reproduction, always manages to creep into most
about every discussion, here and elsewhere. It is a goal to be attained in
achieving good color reproduction, no doubt about that. But I don't have
hard proof that it is the most important dependent variable in a successful
profiling effort.
