Probably way too low. In fact, the recommendation I got for calibration of
my NEC 2690 was 150 cd/m2 when I was going to try to hit 120 cd/m2. Why? 120
cd/m2 is just at the lower limit of what the (brand new) display can adjust
itself to using the backlight alone.
That said, I still try to keep the ambient light as low as possible. Using a
Sekonic L758 Digital meter, I'm able to read the ambient light around the
display (using room darkening shades), no problem getting 20 Lux. Still
light enough not to bump into furniture.
