Has anyone yet crafted a formula for determining the optimum room illumination according to the brightness (white level) of an LCD?

The monitors would certainly be equipped with hoods and the ambient light would be something like Philips D50's.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this :-)

The formula to translate luminance into illuminance is simple: Multiply by pi (i.e. the perfect reflecting diffuser will match your monitor white).

To be able to evaluate reflective colors reliable, there must be a minimum level of illuminance. If you have to compare softproofs and prints, you should adjust your viewing booth to 500 lx (ISO 3664 P2: practical print evaluation) and your display to 160 cd/m2. Of course you have to take care that the level of stray light on your monitor is as little as possible.

The relevant ISO standards are ISO 3664 (Viewing conditions) and ISO 12646 (Displays for colour proofing -- Characteristics and viewing conditions).
