Folks, any room's illumination level is fine to operate a calibrated monitor
under. Really, to each its own. And I respect that. As long as there is no
need to compare a displayed image to some kind of physical hardcopy, as
viewed under some sort of 'reference' lighting -- daylight simulator, etc
--, Regardless of loss of warranty or accelerated wear of the backlit,
who's to stop anyone from operating an LCD monitor at 350 cd/m2 (default
luminance on ACD 23", last time I checked)? It's a free country.
That's one workflow.
And then there is the "other" workflow, fundamentally different, comparing
screen to hardcopy. In this workflow, to obtain a color match requires a
'controlled' level of ambient illumination or calibrated white point
luminance.
