and scratch reduction and the removal of Newton's rings.
I think that light transmission is improved by fluid mounting and
therefore a fluid mounted original will give a better scan.
You can see the improvement if you put a glass dish containing fluid
on a light box. Put one negative in the dish and another on the light
box next to it. The one in the fluid has a greater density range
because it isn't scattering or trapping as much light as the dry
one... that's my theory anyhow...
