Personally I print/scan/display a group of my favorite color images on the devices I color manage. I have a master print on several types of media to compare to. If the original and reproduction look good next to each other by eye, (especially my clients) then all is well.
The best technique to demonstrate color management to regular folks is to scan a color print and display the print and a color managed print of it next to a profiled monitor in their office light.
My experience has been to let the eye explain color management instead of stating complex theory.
If you want accuracy, then the Delta E trip will give you numbers. For myself, Delta E is not the most meaningful way because a Delta E of 22 looks as inaccurate in a dark purple as a Delta E of 2 in a light gray. But, hey, if all of your Delta E's are below 3, then technically you are doing really good.
