Much depends... is it a codec or is it just converting one form of PCM
to another? is there a sample rate conversion?
A codec has far more state than a PCM converter. Sample rate
converters create a need for some internal buffering...

Have you tried it? There's probably no information on this in the
docs because it's an implementation detail, and Apple doesn't want to
tie themselves down to a publicly disclosed implementation.
I currently have an implementation that stays on the safe side, but
in order to try the other implementation, I'd have to flay out the
code a bit and re-code some stuff to see if there's any difference
at all. It might be hard to tell if it's just a few bytes more of
memory usage...
Just looking for a shortcut - is the footprint 300 bytes? Or is it
10kB?
