I installed fink, x11 and it all seemed to work fine.

Did you install X11 via fink, or the Apple X11.app?

Then i installed vim, ssh, and kde

Via fink?

 and after restart of
OS X i could not login with my user account.

Had you rebooted after installing fink and X11?

I'm assuming you mean that you can't login using your user account on the OS X login screen. Does your account show up and your password is rejected? Account doesn't show up? Seems to accept your password but hangs? Seems to accept your password, but returns immediately to the login screen?

Root login
however works fine.
Any idea of what to change in order to get my user
account working.

Can you su to your user account from a shell session? Your recovery will be different if your account exists (like it probably does), or if it is no longer there.

I might close my eyes and reinstall OS X but what then
about my fink and x11 install - should i also install
them again?

Since OS X runs on Unix, reinstalling the OS should seldom be needed. I've worked on Unix boxes for many years and have never had to reinstall the OS to recover from any error. (I have at times wiped a box and installed a newer version because it was easier than doing a bunch of small upgrades, but never to recover from a problem.)

In fact, even rebooting is almost never needed on a Unix OS. Apple sometimes has software update force a reboot, but that's probably because they don't want to try to determine what may be using a program/library they are changing.

Please give us some more information so we can better assist.

randy.
