I just hacked X11.app so that it loaded a full login/shell
environment and then loaded X11 within that. It still makes
everything children of init. it doesn't matter where you start it,
X11 will always launch apps as children of init. this is a
bug/undocumented feature of apple's implimentation. i recommend that
anyone who cares, instead of making lame comments here, email apple
and ask them to change it so that at lease processes are children of
the wm.
Why does it matter? The xterm ends up with no controlling terminal,
but I haven't seen cases where it gets left behind when the session
ends.
You're right, any app that uses the display will die when the display
dies. but almost any app started that does not die w/ the shell will
not die when X11 quits. this is b/c its parent is init, not X11. its
not an issue for apps that draw to the screen because they kill
themselves if the X server quits.
