xterm "hangs"

I have experienced the following problem with Apple's X11 (both
releases) on my new Powerbook 12".

I'm using an xterm, and I will hear a "click" (even when my sound
is off) and the xterm will hang for 3 seconds or so.  I do not have
this problem with Terminal.app.

I do not recall having this problem on my old dual-usb ibook.
